Rotorua: only 8 km from molten lava

We spent 3 days in Rotorua which is known for it's geothermal activity. It is based on a lake and  has a lovely smell of sulphur most of the time. You can see the geothermal activity all over the city. Steam rises from drains and random parts of the earth. In the park sections were cornered off due to the activity.

We went to the largest geyser in the Southern hemisphere which is an area where, once the water under the earths crust had reached a certain amount of pressure it is release in a tunnel of steam. The one in Rotorua usually goes off roughly every hour.

At the geyser, the earths crust is only 8km deep!

It felt like we were on a film set and all the smoke was special FX!
Some of the hot pools are boiling and our guide even cooked us some eggs on one of them.

The many uses of the pools, such as cooking, heating and bathing are what attracted many Māori tribes to the area when they first landed on the island. They had come from the warmer climates of Polynesia and so the warm pools appealed to them.

Whilst in Rotourua we also went White Water Rafting and went down the largest commercial waterfall in the world at 7m. It was EPIC!!!! Rachel even managed to fall out the boat and had to be rescued by the safety team. We went with Kaitiaki Adventures and the guides were relaxed and typically kiwi. They were just having a laugh and a good time! It was a wicked afternoon and well worth 90 bucks. We even got a free pizza and pint because we booked through out hostel.

On our last day in Rotorua we went luging. This is where you basically go to the top of a hill and then get on a go-kart type thing and ride to the bottom as fast as you can! SUPER FUN!!!!! We started off on the scenic rout but by the end we were pelting down the advanced course with all the sharp turns.

We headed to Taupo this afternoon and stopped by Huka Falls which are Awesome!!!
Check them out!!!

Ciao for Now!!!!

Waitomo and Black Water Rafting

We arrived in Waitomo yesterday and whilst some of the other guys went off to do their Black Water Rafting trips (the bus was leaving early this morning but we have an extra night), Rachel and I went for walk. It was a half hour walk through the bush and we saw some of the caves we went in today

We then did an hour's farm walk and I managed to get stung by a bee or wasp on my head!!!! I have never been stung before but in the last 2 months I have been stung twice. On the head and on the bum! Boo!
It was lovely until we came to a field full of huge cows who didn't look to happy that lots of human were walking through their field! We tried to find a way around but luckily another couple came and led the way!
They were not happy!
We did manage to get home in one piece though and had a good nights sleep ready for our adventure today!

We went Black water rafting with the Legendary Black Water Rafting Company! We did a 5 hour trip called the Abyss. We were picked up and met our group and got suited and booted!

We then abseiled down a 35m hole in the ground to get the cave

Once down  we did a  flying fox  under the glow worms which is like a zip line! We had a hot chocolate and flapjack to restore our strength before jumping into the river that runs along the bottom of the cave. We then floated along under thousands of glow worms. It was an amazing thing to see!!! And so romantic!
Looking Sexy

After another pit stop we started to get deeper in there cave! We stumbled down the drunken stubble and took a swim in the nipple pool (you can decide why) and it got a bit more tricky with low hanging rocks and uneven ground! We saw a couple of eels!

`
After climbing up 2 waterfalls we reached the exit and saw daylight again!

And so it was back to head quarters to have a quick shower and to warm up with some soup and bagels!!!!

Such a good day and an experience I will never forget!!!!!

Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach

Now we're back on the Kiwi Experience and hopping around to different places every few days! Our first stop after we got out of Auckland was Hot water Beach! An Hour before low tide you can dig your own hot pools with geothermal water hat rises though the sand! Low tide was at 11.20pm so we all walked down to the beach in the dark and it was a very surreal experience seeing grown adults digging in the sand. The water is so hot that it burns your feet if you're not careful! You have to mix it with sea water!
On our way to Hot Water Beach we stopped off at Cathedral Cove which is beautiful.

I jumped off one of the rocks and had a little swim while Rachel worshiped the sun! We even saw someone propose to his girlfriend! ahhhhhh it was sooooo sweet!!

Paihia, you have been a pleasure!

So after being in Paihia for 4 months Rachel and I are now on the move again! Who would have thought after arriving in mid October we would have worked several jobs between us, lived in a hostel and made some great friends along the way! Here are just a few photos and memories of our time in the Bay of Islands!

Waitangi Treaty Grounds

The time Elias and I Cleaned the staff bathroom and mopped the ceiling

The time we went camping on Urupukapuka

My morning coffee stop

My commute to work

That time we went parasailing

The mountain of laundry I had to fold for accommodation

To see ourselves off before we left Paihia, Rachel, Sam and I went on a dolphin sailing cruise! Absolute one of the best days and highly recommended!

We went on a boat called the Camino and saw wild dolphins. The pod was about 20 dolphins who were mostly friends rather than family.

It was amazing to see dolphins in their own habitat! They were really playful and enjoyed playing in the waves of the boat!

After we went to Robertson Island which is also known as the Island of Love, which was very appropriate as it was Valentines day! Check out the view of the bay form the op of the island

We hoped back on the boat and after a BBQ lunch we sailed the afternoon away!
Such a good day followed by quite a crazy night which was followed by a horrendous morning!!!
Thank you Paihia!

Ciao for now
